How Do You Make a Campfire in Minecraft? Full Recipe Guide

Craft a campfire with sticks, coal or charcoal, and three wood blocks.

To answer how do you make a campfire in Minecraft, gather 3 sticks, 1 coal or charcoal, and 3 logs, wood blocks, stems, or hyphae. In a crafting table, place one stick in the top-center slot, three sticks across the middle row with coal in the center, and three wood blocks across the bottom row. This crafts one campfire.

Campfire recipe and ingredients

You need a crafting table because the campfire recipe uses the full 3x3 crafting grid. The wood does not need to match, so you can combine different types in the same recipe.

IngredientQuantityAccepted items
Stick3Any regular sticks
Coal or charcoal1Coal or charcoal
Wood fuel blocks3Logs, stripped logs, wood, stripped wood, stems, or hyphae

The easiest early-game version uses three logs, three sticks, and one charcoal. You can make sticks from planks, and you can obtain charcoal by smelting a log in a furnace if you have not found coal yet.

How do you make a campfire in Minecraft?

Collect the materials

  1. Break trees and turn the logs into planks.
  2. Craft at least three sticks from the planks.
  3. Mine coal, or smelt a log into charcoal.
  4. Keep three logs, wood blocks, stems, or hyphae for the bottom row.
  5. Use or craft a crafting table.

Arrange the crafting grid

Place the ingredients in this exact pattern:

  • Top row: one stick in the center slot.
  • Middle row: one stick on the left, coal or charcoal in the center, and one stick on the right.
  • Bottom row: one log or other accepted wood block in each slot.

Take the campfire from the result box. A crafted campfire is already lit when you place it, so you do not need flint and steel for the first use.

How to place and light a campfire

Hold the campfire in your hotbar, select it, and use the place button on the top or side of a suitable block. The campfire appears with an orange flame and immediately produces light and smoke.

If a campfire is unlit, use flint and steel on it to light it again. You can also relight it with a fire charge or a flaming projectile. An extinguished campfire remains as a block and can be used again after it is relit.

Campfires do not spread fire to nearby blocks like ordinary fire, which makes them useful for fireplaces, outdoor kitchens, cabins, and decorative paths. They still damage players and mobs standing directly on the lit block, so avoid placing one where you regularly walk.

Using a campfire

A campfire has several useful survival functions beyond decoration.

  • Cook food: Place raw food on the campfire to cook up to four items at once. It does not use fuel, but cooking takes longer than a furnace or smoker.
  • Provide light: A normal lit campfire is a strong light source for a base, campsite, mine entrance, or village path.
  • Create a smoke signal: Campfire smoke rises high enough to help you locate a base. Place a hay bale directly underneath it to make the smoke rise much farther.
  • Protect beekeepers: A lit campfire beneath a bee nest or beehive lets you collect honey or honeycomb without angering the bees. Keep the smoke path unobstructed.
  • Damage mobs: Hostile mobs that stand on a lit campfire take fire damage. This can work as a simple trap, although the block can also hurt you.
  • Work with hoppers: A hopper directly below a campfire can collect items that fall from it, including finished food and certain mob drops.

Campfire cooking is especially useful when you have plenty of meat or fish but limited coal. Put up to four raw food items on the block, then collect each cooked item when it finishes. Extinguishing the campfire while food is cooking interrupts the process, so let the food finish first.

How to make a soul campfire

A soul campfire uses the same layout as a normal campfire, but you replace coal or charcoal with one soul sand or one soul soil.

IngredientQuantity
Stick3
Soul sand or soul soil1
Logs, wood, stems, or hyphae3

Use one stick in the top-center slot, three sticks around the middle row with soul sand or soul soil in the center, and three wood blocks across the bottom row.

Soul campfires have blue flames and a lower light level than normal campfires. They still cook food without fuel and produce smoke, but they do not melt nearby snow or ice. Their flames deal more damage, and a lit soul campfire repels nearby piglins that are not already attacking you.

How to put out a campfire in Minecraft

You can extinguish a campfire without breaking it. The simplest method is to use a shovel on the lit campfire. The block becomes unlit and stops producing light, smoke, and damage.

  • Use a shovel on the campfire.
  • Place water in the same block space to waterlog it.
  • Throw a splash water bottle at it.
  • In Bedrock Edition, direct water flowing into the campfire can also extinguish it.

Rain does not reliably put out a campfire, so do not depend on weather to turn one off. After extinguishing it, use flint and steel or another valid fire-starting method to light it again.

When food is on the campfire, collect the food before putting the block out. Extinguishing a campfire interrupts cooking, and the items may drop rather than finish cooking.

How to break a campfire

You can break a campfire with any tool or with your bare hand, but an axe mines it fastest. Without Silk Touch, a normal campfire drops charcoal rather than the campfire block itself. A soul campfire drops soul soil when mined without Silk Touch.

Use a tool enchanted with Silk Touch if you want to pick up the campfire and place that same block somewhere else. This is useful when moving a decorated campsite, preserving a naturally generated campfire, or relocating a soul campfire.

Any food placed on the campfire drops when the block is broken. Campfires do not drop experience when mined.

Java Edition and Bedrock Edition differences

The campfire recipe, cooking behavior, and main uses are the same in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition. Both editions use three sticks, one coal or charcoal, and three accepted wood blocks for a normal campfire. Both also use soul sand or soul soil for a soul campfire.

The main practical difference is how water interacts with the block. Bedrock Edition supports additional ways to extinguish a campfire with nearby flowing or placed water. Bedrock also allows pistons to break campfires, while Java Edition pistons do not move or break them. If you are building a redstone system, test the design in the edition you play.

Common campfire mistakes and faster options

  • Putting coal in the wrong slot: Coal or charcoal belongs in the center of the middle row, not the top row.
  • Using planks in the bottom row: The recipe requires logs, wood blocks, stems, hyphae, or their stripped forms, not ordinary planks.
  • Expecting fuel to be needed: Campfires cook food without coal, charcoal, wood, or another fuel item.
  • Standing on the flame: Lit campfires deal damage to entities on top of them.
  • Using an unlit campfire for cooking: Food can be placed on an unlit campfire, but it will not cook until the block is lit.
  • Breaking a village campfire without Silk Touch: You will receive its drop instead of carrying the original block.

If you only need a light source, torches are cheaper and safer to place around a busy base. If you need fast cooking, use a smoker. Choose a campfire when you want fuel-free cooking, a smoke marker, bee protection, or a natural-looking fire pit in the same block.
